Do you ever have to speak to groups big or small? You won’t go wrong to watch the short video below of the 2015 Toastmasters International World Champion of Public Speaking. Mohammed Qahtani won the contest despite having overcome a stutter. Three things to watch:
- Look how he uses humour to get the audience quickly on his side
- Watch how he uses the whole stage, moving to a new position and using hand gestures to illustrate each anecdote he tells
- Notice how he pauses to grab the audience’s attention during both dramatic and comedic moments
Remember the audience wants you to succeed. Like anything else, developing your public speaking skills takes practice. Try to incorporate some of Qahtani’s techniques in your daily life, whether you’re speaking to a group of friends or a boardroom.
